Acid green! Plasma blue! Who knew that cheese came in all these
colors? Yes, color us jaded, because the whole stuff-lighting-up trip
just kinda leaves us cold. We always thought that being hypnotized by
shiny objects was a mark of low status on the evolutionary totem pole.
And in a mouse, all this glo-glo action seems especially weird – you
don’t have eyes in your hands, right?
Well, when we look
past the cornball flash, we grudgingly admit that this Razer
Diamondback Gaming Mouse has more going for it than gimmickry. That
1600dpi resolution, for one thing. The 7 programmable buttons and
on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment, for two more. And if the reviews are
to believed, it’s as responsive to your movements as a Congressman from
Alabama is to James Dobson.
We wanted to laugh at the Razer
Diamondback Gaming Mouse, to dismiss it and its luminous peacockery.
Turns out the thing actually works pretty well. Now, if only those
lights came with an OFF switch…

Her body thrilled as she ran her fingertips gently over the HP Pavilion
Notebook PC’s smooth keys. It was not the handsomest computer she’d
seen—no, the Apple store in the city was full of pedigreed laptops clad
in the most current housings—but, like the wealthiest boys in her class
at Yale, the senators’ sons and scions of industry, those fancified
Macs held no deep appeal to her.
Sure, it was somewhat
exciting to be seen with one around town, to prompt the whisperers to
wonder to each other “who’s the girl with the Mac?” But after a few
afternoon outings, she had found herself longing to cast off that role
like a beautiful but uncomfortable gown.
Ultimately, the
social striver in her lost out to the homegrown romantic. She knew what
kind of a computer she wanted to spend her days with, and she knew
they’d spend them in the humble coffeehouses nearer the middlebrow
neighborhood of her childhood. This Pavilion could find a place there.
It was a hard worker, she knew, and an 80-gig hard drive bespoke its
predisposition toward self-improvement.
So it was
refurbished. So what? She had a history too, but what did any of that
matter from now on? They could make a life together, she knew. This
Pavilion, it had something special inside it. Something that pulled her
to it like the moon tugs at the seas. Something she trusted. Something…

A child bounces a ball on a brilliant green lawn. Some grain spills
from a chute into a truck. An old person turns and smiles with a
twinkle in his or her eye. There’s a new spirit in America. A spirit of
hope. A spirit of sharing. A spirit of vague generalities and
sentimental pandering. That’s the Mustek spirit, and it blows as hard
as the winds of freedom buffeting our land.
This spirit comes to life in the Mustek MDC-532Z Digital Camera. You can see it in the 2.5” TFT LCD
display. You can feel it in the 5.2MP optical sensor and the 3X optical
zoom. That moist thumping sound you hear is the heart of America
beating. With an injection of Mustek MDC-532Z, it’s beating stronger than ever. Long may it wave.

A sunny summer day. Timestamp: 06 JUL 1997 2:37
PM. A little girl in one of those kiddie swimming pools with flexible
sides, a couple of feet deep. “Daddy, come in the water.” Daddy hoists
a leg, mugs for the camera, side-flops in. The side of the pool
collapses. Daddy and daughter are borne out into the yard on the
resulting wave. Oh, the looks on their faces, the confusion and terror.
You watch it again and again. And again.
You don’t care
anymore what America thinks the funniest home video is. You found it
one Sunday evening. And with your Direct TV/Tivo Remote DTV36, you can replay it over and over. And over.
Don’t
let the name fool you. It works with series 1, 2, and 3 TiVos, whether they’re Direct TV models or not. At this price, put one in every
room. Or use them on pranking missions, crouching outside the homes of
your friends and neighbors and controlling their TiVos as if by magic.
If you get caught and your DTV36 remote gets confiscated or destroyed, big deal. You’re only out 99 cents.
You
weren’t there on that magical July afternoon in 1997, wherever “there” was.
But you’ve got the next best thing: the right episode on your TiVo, and
the right remote in your hand. So relive it, in slo-mo and reverse and
sped-up, with the push of a button, again and again.
And again.

Oh, how the children laughed at the thousands of shining balloons
rolling across the ground! Red ones, blue ones, green ones, gold ones,

“On behalf of His Majesty the
King of England, I bid you greetings,” intoned Ambassador Wilcroft, his
salutation echoing through the opulent court of the Emir. “May the
friendship between our two sovereign monarchs ever remain as sweet as
rose-water and as enduring as the camel.” Rather purple stuff, Wilcroft
admitted, but if such flattery would win the all-important
peacock-feather concession for British merchants, he was happy to spout
it.
After a suitably regal moment of pause, the Emir exhaled
tiredly and rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, as enduring as the camel.
Whatever you say. The point is, you’re here for a piece of that peacock
action, am I right? Well, John Bull, I don’t know how they do things in
Swindon, but round these parts you gotta pay to play, you get me? What
have you brought for your old buddy the Emir?”
“I’m
pleased you’ve asked, Your Emirality,” Wilcroft burbled through a stage
smile. “May I present to you a selection of the finest works and
produce of the Empire? A full tea service of Sheffield plate metalware,
complete with tea from Madras and sugar from Jamaica. One dozen
Birmingham rifles, with ivory inlays from the elephants of Tanganyika.
A robe crafted from wallaby hides -”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” the Emir brusquely waved a hand. “Save it, guv. Teapots? Wallaby skins? Sugar? I’ve got
sugar. I’m lousy with tea. The dozen rifles were a nice thought, but I
roll pretty deep as it is. You don’t get to be Emir without packing a
little heat, you know? Thing is, it’s not looking like we’re going to
be able to do business together. Sorry you came all this way and
everything, but you know how it goes.”
Wilcroft’s ruddy
face drained white, his mouth flopping open like a fish’s. “B-but, I-I
don’t understand. Have the Russians made a better offer?”
“Heh, heh. Yeah, you could say that. I wasn’t too wild about the Tsar’s stooge, but when he whipped out the Logitech Wireless USB Music
System for PC, I was all like ‘Sign me up!’ See, it lets me stream my
mp3 collection from my computer to my home stereo, or to anything else
with RCA inputs. Its Bluetooth wireless
capabilities are truly fit for a badass such as myself, and the remote
lets me control volume, track selection, all that. For an absolute
monarch like me, that’s a deal-maker. Almost made it worth enduring
that Russian emissary’s breath. I’m telling you, you never smelled
anything like it. It was brutal.”
Wilcroft panicked, his
mind racing. What on Earth could the Emir possibly be talking about?
Had the power of his position destroyed the man’s mind? He made a
mental note to ask His Majesty’s spies in Moscow what “mp3 collection”
might mean, and frantically attempted to salvage the negotiation.
“Your
Emiritude, if I may,” he started, tentatively at first, “I remind the
court that personal computers are still decades away, perhaps a
century, perhaps more. By such time, the Czar may have a stranglehold
on the peacock-feather trade throughout the region, at which time
Russia may well decide that they can manage nicely without any Emirs
between them and their objectives. I ask you, Your Emirency -”
“Oh,
no. No, no, no,” the Emir interrupted with a half-smile. “You’re not
killing this high for me. Not only do I have total control of my
domain, I also have total control of my music collection thanks to the the Logitech Wireless USB Music
System for PC. And there’s
no way I’m giving that up for a couple of popguns and a tea set. We
done here or what?”

“Hi, Helen. Is Bob in there?”
“Mr. ParaUniversalLineBros is out of the office just now, Mr. Wellesburg. Can I help?”
“Maybe, Helen, Maybe. I’m looking for some information on a Philips Power Sentry Theatre Director.”
“Everybody’s talking about him these days, Mr. Wellesburg.”
“I understand he did a picture with you a few years ago.”
“Yes,
sir, he was a dream to work with. He was always very stable when we
needed battery backup during power outages, and was especially good
with high performance home entertainment equipment.”
“That’s the kind of thing I like to hear.”
“Plus,
and I don’t know if I should be telling you this, Mr. Wellsburg, but he
had five NEMA 5-15P input connections and ten NEMA 5-15R Surge

you’re a miracle. This Philips Power Sentry Theatre Director fella
sounds like exactly what I need to head up my all-lobster version of
Cats. Tell Bob we’re still on for lunch tomorrow?”

I am a nocturnal creature; daylight pains my sensitive eyes. My
pallid skin is unaccustomed to the baking sun. Only enveloped in the
shroud of darkness am I at home.
Nearly invisible, I prowl
the shadows of Paragon City between dusk and dawn, wreaking terrible
justice about the head, neck and shoulders of any who would prey upon
the weak.
Bursts of illumination! Gunfire! The Outcasts! For
a few short moments, my world lit by strobe. The deadly, chaotic tango
of close-quarters combat unfolds in a confused cacophony of screams,
small-arms fire and the sounds of breaking bone. I make short work of
my attackers, and acquire an enhancement for my troubles.
Once
again, all is darkness—except for the dim, blue glow of my Razer Copperhead Gaming Mouse, painting once side of my face in
cerulean chiaroscuro. I catch a glimpse of my reflection in the
half-filled glass of Mr. Pibb that sits atop my PC tower, and smile a
cruel smile.
The night belongs to StankFinger666! Leaping over a fence, I vanish from the scene without a trace.

I remember when I was eight, my mother told me the story of the
magical bee that followed Mozart around Vienna, no matter where Mozart
tried to hide. “Mother,” I said. “What about to the toilet?” and she
glared at me as she heaped lambchops on my plate. I never had a Philips
WACS57 Wireless Music Center & Station. I
had a basset hound. We named it Lord Alberto Von Batman The Fifth. Lord
Alberto Von Batman could never play my CD, CD-R CD-RW, MP3-CD or WMA-CD like the Streamium. I was resentful.
The
only thing in the house with an 80 GB hard drive was the family skunk,
and a skunk does not have wireless streaming with Direct Content access
to artist album or playlists. Although that skunk did try, bless it’s
heart. And it did support ID3 tags. Lord Alberto Von Batman chased it into a river one summer’s day. It never returned. The Philips WACS57 Wireless
Music Center & Station is a slot loader. You could move your whole
CD collection that way, and use the multiple playback modes to listen
to it in exciting new ways. I can fit a whole potato in my mouth.
The Philips WACS57 Wireless
Music Center & Station can record an mp3 at 128 or 160 and allows
wireless streaming from PC via UPnP. It has an Analog AUX
in and Line-out, plus Ethernet, Digital coaxial out and Digital optical
out. And a two way remote control, like the one I attached to the swan
that summer in Paris. No one ever figured out how a swan won a cake
baking competition. The Philips WACS57 Wireless Music Center & Station is wall mountable. What’s that, scarecrow? The scarecrow says four AAA batteries are included. Isn’t he the nicest scarecrow?
Warranty: One year Phillips

Internet people know: you just can’t have enough add-ons. Wouldn’t a
Death Star be a little better with phasers? Or what if Iron Man also
turned into a race car that could drive a Voltron Lion with telepathy?
Or what about if Reed Richards’s astral form moved into the body of a
cyborg Superman that also had a handful of Green Lantern rings and
worked for an alien warlord? Okay, maybe that last one was a stupid
example.
Anyway, this is the sort of logic that brings us the wonderful Razer Pro|Type Keyboard with iPod Dock, Media Controls and USB Hub.
The Razer Pro|Type Keyboard by itself is a nice piece of typing
cheesecake. It is programmable, so all those special keys on the side
can handle all your one-touch requirements. But it also allows up to
ten different profiles that can be autoswapped on the fly, so you could
have one named “Programming” and one named “Cyberchat” and one named
“The Cake Is A Lie” and one named “Pizza Zombie” and basically never
have to leave the computer again, except to get the door when the pizza
zombie shows up with your dinner. Also the keys are ultra touch, which
is the sort of poetic way Gertrude Stein would describe them had she
ever known the sensual joy of typing out “omg brb”.
The
Razer Pro|Type Keyboard also includes a line-out jack, which is ideal
since it has an iPod dock built in. This removes the need for your iPod
cable, freeing up precious desk real estate as we stand on the cusp of
a housing crisis. And you can listen to your tunes!
While
you listen, sync and charge your iPod, typing happily without cease,
you also will be able to use the Razer Pro|Type Keyboard’s two
convenient USB ports and the gold-plated USB
connector (for maximum conductivity, don’t’cha’know). This powerhouse
of efficiency also includes Media Hot Keys, giving you instant access
to important media programs. And you get two iPod adaptors just to wrap
it up.
We might never get to see what it would be like if
Batman was a half-paladin multiclass bard-illusionist that flew his
Spelljammer to Athas, but the Razer Pro|Type Keyboard with iPod Dock,
Media Controls and USB Hub will make you feel better than seeing Manimal fight the lizards from V for control of Automan’s programming.
Warranty: One year Razer
Features:
- iPod Dock: Synchronize and charge your iPod easily
- 10 Customizable Profiles: Configure keyboard profiles according to your needs
- 10 Programmable Keys: Switch Profiles and launch applications with a touch of a button
- Ultra Touch-sensitive keys: For enhanced and more precise key response
- On-the-Fly Profile Switching: Auto swap keyboard profiles upon program detection
- Multimedia Hub: Includes line-out and 2 USB ports for convenient connection to your peripherals
- Media Hot Keys: Provide one-touch access to media programs
In the box:
- Razer Pro|Type Keyboard
- User’s manual and Driver disc
- Two (2) iPod adaptors

A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of kids dressed in skinny piano ties
and off-the-shoulder neon blue dresses and thought “That’s great, class
is coming back to fashion”. Then they asked me for candy and I
remembered what day it was. But the 80’s won’t ever die. Not when I’ve
still got all these videotapes of Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Thankfully I’ve got the Honestech MY IPTV Anywhere Deluxe & VHS to DVD Software.
The software lets me convert VHS to DVD,
so finally my kids will believe me when I say Adam Sandler was on a
game show years before Saturday Night Live. And it lets me convert
cassettes and LPs into mp3 files which is great, because my Level 42
Greatest Hits is about to snap, I play it so much.
The IPTV Anywhere Deluxe is just as great. It takes only analog signals, which is the way it used to be anyway, and supports USB 2.0 and Plug and Play. It works with standard cable tv, S-Video and AV, and even comes with the cables. And it uses MPEG-4 H.264 to give a tv quality broadcast that, after you plug it all up, lets you watch your tv anywhere. ANYWHERE. I can be at work pausing and rewinding MTV.
Not like they’re any good now, but they’ll figure it out soon. And when
they do, it’s an all Johnny Hates Jazz weekend in my cubicle!
Grab this Honestech MY IPTV Anywhere Deluxe & VHS to DVD Software and, my friend, you’ll KNOW where the beef has been!

Hey, Hollywood: want a cheap, surefire hit? The kind of movie that
can spawn lucrative straight-to-video sequels until the angel’s trumpet
sounds? Bring back the madcap road comedy. You know, like Cannonball Run or Every Which Way But Loose.
Find a hunky but folksy aging male star for the lead (Mr. Swayze, call
your agent). Maybe convince him to grow a mustache. Then surround him
with an eager-to-work ensemble cast: Borscht Belt survivors, wacky
neighbors from failed sitcoms, a couple of buxom airbrushed airheads, a
country singer under the sad delusion that he could be a movie star,
Dom DeLuise. Write a script by drawing random hilarious situations out
of a hat, blow up a couple of Trans Ams, and eureka! You’ve struck
box-office gold!
Until then, we’ll have to reenact that
beloved subgenre in our daily lives with the Whistler 1773 Laser &
Radar Detector. It gives us 360-degree protection from X, K, KA, and
SuperWide radar bands, along with laser, SWS
and VG-2. So it’s coming along every time we’re fleeing down some dirt
road from a corrupt local sheriff, hoping that we don’t run into that
biker gang we ticked off, and mediating between the spunky but sexy
hitchhiker in the Daisy Dukes and our pet python in the back seat. In
other words, we’ll use the Whistler 1773 Laser & Radar Detector
every day for the rest of our lives.
Warranty: One year
Features:
- 360ø Total Perimeter Protection
- Full Feature with POP Detection
- POP Mode Detection
- Easy-to-Understand Real Voice

We’re not sure what iGo is referring to with the name “WallPower”.
Are they riffing on the idea of willpower, to say that with this device
you can power your mobile phone, Smartphone, PDA/handheld
and some Bluetooth-enabled devices at will? Or are they using rhyme to
evoke the term “wallflower”? Yeah, sure, the WallPower clings to the
wall when you plug it into a standard AC outlet. But isn’t that timid
image at odds with its go-anywhere, road-warrior ethic? Maybe they
weren’t intending “WallPower” as a reference to anything, just as a
catchy, descriptive name on its own merits. Problem is, it’s not that
catchy, or descriptive, or meritorious.
We give this
incoherent, lifeless product name a C-minus. At least iGo’s
product-design people are a little more on-the-ball than their
product-naming people. Weighing in at a mere six ounces, the iGo
WallPower 2000 is a single-adapter approach to your multiple-device
lifestyle. It includes 5 tips for LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and
Sprint mobile phones, and to power other devices, you can go straight
to iGo for additional interchangeable iTips (sold separately – or
should that be iSold iSeparately?). The iGo WallPower converts regular
old AC power into the kind of juice your device thirsts after. And
nobody says you can’t call your two units whatever you want – we call ours “Conor”
and “Jerametrius”.
Warranty: 2 years
Features:
- Power at home or office from any standard
wall outlet, allowing users to rapidly charge virtually all gadgets up
to eight times faster than standard USB and trickle chargers
- Interchangeable power tips allow you to power/charge multiple devices with a single adapter
- Includes five iGo power tips for select mobile phone models, including: LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sprint (other iGo power tips sold separately)
- Works with multiple gadgets including mobile phones, Bluetooth headsets, Smartphones, PDAs, MP3 players, portable gaming devices, digital cameras and more
- No need to buy a new adapter when upgrading your devices – compatible with the latest models
- 8 Watt continuous output
- Utilizes rapid charge technology for the fastest charge
- Take it everywhere; it weighs only 6 oz.
- Use only with A-series power tips
- Over-voltage, over-temperature short circuit and surge protection
- Retractable Outlet Blades
- International Plug Inserts Available Separately from iGo
- AC Input: 100-240 VAC; 0.3A; 50/60 Hz

Dear Love Brute:
I’ve been in a stable,
loving relationship with an iPod for a couple of years now. He’s
good-looking, easy to get along with, a good provider of entertainment.
But, honestly, things are getting a little boring, a little
predictable. I’ve even found myself looking longingly at Zunes and
iRivers online – just looking, not buying…yet. I don’t want to cheat,
but I also can’t see myself being happy with the same old thing for the
rest of my life. Since I lack the basic intelligence and courage to
make my own decision, I need you to tell me what to do.
Yet Another Wandering Nymph
Dear YAWN:
You
minx. What I should do is reach through the Internet and slap you silly
for lying to me. You say you don’t want to cheat on your iPod, but then
why the secret imaginary trysts with the other leading brands? Why
write me at all?
But rather than break up yet another lousy
marriage, I’ll say this: you owe it to your iPod to explore all the
options before you give up on this relationship. Maybe he’s as bored as
you are.
So let me suggest a little media aid. It’s called the Keyspan TVI-200C
TuneView Remote for iPod, and it just might blow your minds. Ever
fantasized about connecting your iPod to stereo speakers? Connecting
your iPod to your TV? Charging your iPod from an AC outlet? The
TuneView makes it all possible. And if you’re into the whole top/bottom
scene, you can control your iPod from anywhere in the house, with an LCD screen right there on the remote.
It’s
not for everyone, especially if you don’t have much storage space: the
TuneView includes a universal iPod dock, the aforementioned 2-way RF
remote, a USB power adapter, audio and USB cables, and selected dock adapters. But before you go running into the arms of another MP3 player, spend a little intimate time with the Keyspan TVI-200C TuneView Remote for iPod. I can’t think of any better way to turn ho-hum into ho-hot.
The Love Brute

Is there anything sadder than your dreary, soul-killing job in that
ugly gray, windowless office? We say yes, definitely, and here it is:
The same job, in the same office, with the Screen Dreams Living Beaches
Screensaver on your monitor.
In theory, the imagery of
sun, surf and sand lets you escape in your mind a little bit, imagining
you’ve disappeared from your white-collar prison and into a Corona ad
come to life. In practice, though, all it’s gonna do is highlight the
dispiritingly stark contradiction between your rather unimaginative
idea of paradise and the dismal, shabby cell you occupy instead.
Seriously, there’s only way this DVD
is going to do anything to your spirits other than depress them
further—and that’s as part of a multisensory experience that also
includes mounting sun lamps on your office shelves and drinking four or
more piña coladas per workday. But shoot, don’t take our word for it;
buy it and try it.

Hey, sorry to get all sales-y on you for a minute, but we can’t always
help it. Once in a while a product just gives us the ol’
cootchie-cootchie-coo in that very ticklish but oft-neglected
gadget-fanboy region of our brains. And wouldn’t you know it! Here
comes the amazing little Samsung Q1 Ultra-Mobile PC, clutching a great
big fuzzy feather.
This ain’t no PDA. This ain’t no SmartPhone.
This ain’t no foolin’ around. The Samsung Q1 (once known under the
mysterious codename “Origami”) gives you a complete and total, full-on,
rootin’-tootin’ personal computin’ experience, wherever you are - and
you could be anywhere. The Q1 is a super-petite five-and-a-half inches
by one by nine. Seriously. This is some oh-the-places-you’ll-go action,
right here.
But don’t underestimate it: There’s 40 GB of storage
space in that svelte chassis for your work files, MP3s and whatever.
With standard Ethernet, wireless and Bluetooth capabilities, you’ll be
good and connected. There’s even a twin array microphone for VOIP
calls. I know, right?
Play movies, photos and music (without
even starting windows). Combine the three-button pad with eight-way
stick for PC gaming. Watch video in more formats than you can shake a
stick at without tiring out your stick-shakin’ arm. The on-board
speakers provide audio that’s as crisp and clear as early November in
Northern Michigan. Back before global warming.
Use the “virtual
keyboard” feature on the pretty little seven-inch touchscreen, or
connect an external keyboard and mouse when you have time to settle in
for a while, in your hotel, or the conference room. The Q1 may be
PDA-small, but you’re on a real computer here, son.
That’s
right, short of… oh, 3D gaming—this feisty featherweight can do most
everything its big brothers do, yet it weighs less than two pounds
soakin’ wet. (Note: Do not soak the Q1.)

The iRobot Roomba Discovery SE - Model 4220 is as adorable as that cute chubby hedgehog that was in the daily UK papers this week. Now, it’s generally not Woot’s policy to link to outside sites, just like it’s not the iRobot Roomba Discovery SE - Model 4220’s policy to leave any dirt behind. It handles carpets and hard floors in an ongoing
quest to keep your house as clean and respectable as our happy little
website, even having two Virtual Walls that can be programmed to keep
your Roomba out of off-limit areas. But every so often our editors go to bed, just as the iRobot Roomba Discovery SE - Model 4220 will sometimes automatically return to its Home Base to recharge. And when that happens, we can get away with a little more. So if you happened to figure out what words to type into
Google to see that specific hedgehog, well, how could it be our fault?
You’re the one that did all the hard work to find the link all by
yourself, just like the loyal and faithful iRobot Roomba Discovery SE -
Model 4220 will clean your house without ever asking for anything but a
plug and maybe a little backup if it runs into the cat.
Warranty: 1 year
Features:
- Active Dirt Response: Roomba senses and finds dirt. Once dirtier
areas are detected, Roomba automatically increases the intensity and
focus of its cleaning.
- Cleaning Intelligence: Just push a button and Roomba automatically
calculates how long it needs to work to clean your entire room.
- Advanced Power System: Roomba has a microprocessor controlled
charging system that provides up to 120 minutes of cleaning power, It
recharges its battery in 3 hours, 60% faster than the original Roomba.
